Lakshman cut off the nose of Suparnakha, a rakasha sister of Ravana who wanted to marry Ram. Lakshman never slept in the exile of 14 years, Sita & Ram embraced celibacy. Sita & Lakshman also went with him in Dandaka forest.
Panicked Dashrath decides to make Ram a king but then Kaikeyi demands the exile of Ram for 14 years. They cursed Dashrath that he will also die in the pain of his sons.
Her three Sisters Urmila, Mandavi & Shrutakirti are also got married to the brother of Ram i.e Laxman, Bharat & Shatrughan.ĭashrath accidently kills innocent Shravan who was on his way to pilgrimage with his blind parents. To everyone’s surprise, Ram managed to break the bow and get married to Sita. Sita picked up the bow of his Shiva which is too heavy for the men and Janaka decided whoever will pick this bow will get to marry with Sita. With Vedas, she is a master of culinary too. The author has depicted Sita as a scholar of Vedas who sits in the conference with her father with all the sages. Then the story moves to the birth of Dashrath’s four sons. The story starts with the birth of Sita, King Janaka finds her inside the earth and adopted Sita as of her daughter. In this chapter, the author has accumulated the brief introduction of Ramayana. Valmiki taught this verse to Luv & Kush and they performed it in Ayodhya without realizing that the protagonist is the Ram & Sita, his father & mother. This book starts with the section ‘What Shiva told Shakti’ where the author has written how the Ramayana is overheard by a crow named Kakabhusandi and share with Narada, who later passed it to Valmiki. Although I am a regular watcher of his show ‘Devlok with Devdutt Pattanaik’ but this is the first book of him which I have read. The author of this book Devdutt Pattanaik is well known for his unique approach to getting understands the people the reality of mythology. Personally, I don’t like how the women were treated in the Ramayana.
Each and every verse of Ramayana presents an idealistic truth. This book approaches Ram by speculating on Sita: her childhood with her father, Janaka, who hosted sages mentioned in the Upanishads her stay in the forest with her husband, who had to be a celibate ascetic while she was in the prime of her youth her interactions with the women of Lanka, recipes she exchanged, emotions they shared her connection with the earth, her mother, and with the trees, her sisters her role as the Goddess, the untamed Kali as well as the demure Gauri, in transforming the stoic prince of Ayodhya into God.
And so the mythologist and illustrator Devdutt Pattanaik retells the Ramayana, drawing attention to the many oral, visual and written retellings composed in different times, in different places, by different poets, each one trying to solve the puzzle in its own unique way. The intention seems to be to provoke thought on notions of fidelity, property and self-image. Ram's refusal to remarry to produce a royal heir adds to the complexity. This seems a deliberate souring of an uplifting narrative. It is significant that the only character in Hindu mythology, a king at that, to be given the title of ekam-patni-vrata, devoted to a single wife, is associated with the most unjust act of abandoning her in the forest to protect family reputation.
